Southern Africa 2009

My wife and I travelled to southern Africa in 2009 to join up with a 'GAP Adventures' group for a 5,500km tour of Southern Africa which included the countries of South Africa, Namibia, Botswana and Zambia. These are a selection of photos from that amazing twenty one day tour.

South Africa

Our tour in southern Africa started in Capetown and include the western & northern cape provinces. We travelled north from Capetown to Gariep (Orange) river via Lamberts Bay and crossing into Namibia at Vioolsdrift. We had planned our time well to coincide with the early blooms of wild flowers in northern South Africa.

Our tour of southern Africa included travelling the full length of this most amazing country, starting at the Orange river in the south and visiting Keetmanshoop, Swakopmund, Etoshe NP, Windhoek, and finaly entering Botswana at Gobabis. Namibia was the real highlight of the tour, having provided us with the greatest diversity of beauty in terms of scenery, wildlife and people.

We crossed northern Botswana and visited the Okavango Delta and Chobe NP, exiting at Kasane. These two locations were more than enough compensation for the lack lustre landscapes of this northern part of Botswana. After Namibia it would be difficult to compete with it's diversity of land forms, but the Okavango delta had a very special stillness of beauty that could only be experienced onboard a mokoro (dugout canoe).

We spent less than 24 hours in Zambia where we took several tour flights to the Victoria falls and finally our flight back to Johanesburg in South Africa. Dispite the short visit it did allow us to see that most wonderous waterfall from two points of view. Jackie saw it from a hellicopter and I from a Microlight. It was the icing on the cake for me to fly like a bird and experience the real sense of flight.
